The province of Huíla is located in the Southwest region of the country, having, grosso modo, a rectangular shape. Its total surface area of 78,879 sq km serves an estimated population of about 2.6 million people, which matches an average of 32 inhabitants per square km.

Huila is confined to the West with the province of Namibe, to the North with the provinces of Benguela and Huambo, to the East with Bié and Cuando-Cubango, and to the South with the province of Cunene. Nowadays, its administrative division is composed by 14 municipalities (Lubango, Humpata, Cacula, Caconda, Chipingo, Matala, Quipungo, Jamba, Chicomba, Quilenques, Gambos, Chibia, Kaluquembe and Cuvango).

The municipality of Lubango has an estimated population of about 1,414,115 inhabitants , from which 1,155,898 inhabitants actually live in the city or in the suburbs. The municipality's populational density is 450 inhabitants per sq Km.

Huíla's population belongs, in most cases, to the following ethnic groups: N’haneka, Humbi and Umbundu. Spoken languages are: N´haneka – Humbi, Umbundu and, in some cases, N’ganguela. The population makes its living out from agriculture and stock raising.

Surrounded by astouding landscapes and views, Lubango (province of Huíla) continues to be, even nowadays, a true pioneer as far as teaching is concerned in Angola. Widely known as the "City of Schools", it was one of the first countryside cities to have secondary schools or highschools, and ever since, never forgot to really incentivate the process of educating the Angolans.

In Huíla, climate is moist tropical and the average yearly temperature is 19º C. This province is limited to the East by Cunene River and to the South by Caculuvar River. Regarding its fauna, in Huíla, the most numerous animal species are lions, elephants, pallancas, ollongos and buffalos.

The province's main natural resources are, beside agriculture and stock raising products, minerals like granite, iron and gold. Recently, some quite important diamonds deposits have been found.
