About the Competition

AngolaAngola [ANG]

Angola's profile has risen remarkably in recent years, the Palancas Negras ditching their reputation as one of African football's middle-ranked powers to become one of the continent's leading lights. This was achieved largely thanks to their surprise qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup ™ finals in Germany at the expense of superpower Nigeria, a feat that saw Angola move into new and exalted company.

Although not qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, taking place from June 11 on, Angola holds its statute of country respecting African football. And now, under the condition of hosting the most important competition of the continental “sports-king”, there are no reasons left to believe even more in its abilities; in the strength of its football.

There have been few changes since Germany 2006. In fact, these were deep changes if we take into consideration that Mabi de Almeida leaded the national side in replacement of Oliveira Gonçalves, whom he was assistant. The international career of striker Akwa, who is both Angola’s most capped international and top goalscorer come to an end while other units were passed over to give place to younger and promising footballers.

The absence of Akwa and Mantorras has served to catapult Flávio to the forefront of the Angolan attack. Flávio was, of course, the scorer of the only Angolan goal at the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals with Iran. However, Angola should resent of the absent of forward Manucho Barros of Valladolid of the First Spanish League. A disagreement with manager Manuel José is the cause of the problem.

Angola continues to utilise their football team in a bid to also change the country's image. And the 2010 CAF Africa Cup of Nations is a door opened for this African nation to show the world its worth.
